VoIP FAQ

A: It depends on the provider, their service, and your internet speed. All three must be at an adequate level, and your VoIP calls will sound the same as normal phone calls. If one of these is not in sync, then your calls will experience latency, dropped calls, and poor sound quality.

The good news is c2mtech can help you choose the correct package to ensure high quality VoIP communication.

A: Most importantly, you need a quality, high speed internet connection and the best Quality of Service Routers with Voice Prioritization. Voice and Data will both travel across your data network under a VoIP solution. You may not notice if a data packet is sent a couple of seconds slow, but you will notice with a slow voice packet due to a complete lack of sound or distortion. The “latency” experienced can be extinguished with a business class internet connection that has an SLA regarding packet loss and a Router with VLAN capabilities to prioritize Voice packets.

A: If your network goes down, you will not be able to receive or make phone calls. If your supplier does not allow for redundancy you should plan for a backup. For example, keeping just a couple of regular phone lines will allow your business phone system to automatically switch over if your network should fail.

A: As the speed of your data service has a direct impact on your call quality, it would be best to contact your provider beforehand to see if the service you have will support VoIP. The lack of speed from a basic internet connection will make your VoIP calls sound distorted.

A: A normal system will come with a control box, mounted on the wall. Digital/VoIP handsets connect to this main equipment which you have full control over.

A: Premise-based solutions allow you to control all aspects of your own phone system. There is a higher upfront cost of installation costs and time involved to install or migrate, but ongoing support and maintenance costs are low.

Hosted VoIP solutions are more reliable as outages will never happen, installation costs are also inexpensive and fast. The downside with hosted VoIP solutions are they are more expensive, you are paying monthly service fees that are ongoing, similar to a phone bill.

A: Scaling your phone is possible on most VoIP phone systems the same as any normal phone system. However, you should still let the experts at c2mtech know expected business growth and future needs. This allows our team to find the right solution compatible with your business now and in the future.

A: You can have a phone system in each office, or just in one location. Having a system in each location is a preferred setup, enabling multiple VoIP handsets that are reliable across the VPN. If it comes down to cost, then having one VOIP in a single office will work with the same results.

A: Yes, it is compatible. You do not need a VoIP phone to make VoIP calls. But, implementing a VoIP phone system is the only way to eliminate monthly phone service bills. VoIP phones can be used with a regular system, and allow for you to upgrade components of your system in stages.

A: Many telephone service providers do offer VoIP service. But most of these providers only offer residential/home applications and do not have the ability to provide quality services needed by a business.

A: No, Skype is a well known provider of a computer based VoIP solution, which is used without a phone system. There are also Hosted VoIP options which do not require an on site VoIP phone system, rather it is in the cloud

A: No. If you have an on-premise VoIP phone system, you can use analog and digital phone handsets to make VoIP phone calls.
